The Royal Flying Doctor Service is an Australian icon and a world first. With the help of Alf Traeger's pedal radio the Reverend John Flynn's Aerial Medical Service took to the sky on May 5th, 1928.The RFDS now services an area of more than 7,150,000 square kilometres providing a 'Mantle of Safety' to an area larger than Western Europe. A visit to the Alice Springs base, originally built in 1939 and still operational today, provides an insight into a uniquely Australian Service. You will see an audio-visual presentation, followed by a guided tour of the radio communication section. Then browse through our interactive museum at your leisure. Enjoy flavoursome food and coffee in our cafe, housed in one of the town's finest Heritage buildings, and then purchase a souvenir from our shop. Monday to Saturday from 9.00am to 5.00pm. Sundays and public holidays 1.00pm to 5.00pm. Last tour 4.00pm. Click here to make a donation to the RFDS.
